Thursday, October 1st kicks off the 39th Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Starting in October 1981 as a day of unity, #DVAM has continued to grow and unite advocates and survivors with the common goal of educating people about domestic violence, finding new methods of prevention, and ultimately ending the cycle of domestic violence within our communities.
Awareness months are all about showing your support, and there are several ways you can show that you stand with victims and survivors of domestic violence. A good way to start is by educating yourself on the myths and facts regarding domestic violence, and sharing information with others. AVRC has many great educational articles regarding domestic violence, and we will be posting more throughout the month, so keep an eye out!
If you are sharing and supporting via social media, consider using the Domestic Violence Awareness Month hashtags, including:
#DVAM or #DVAM2026
#Every1KnowsSome1
#1Thing
You can also participate in #DVAM events, including Purple Thursday on October 15th. Sport all your best purple pieces, strike a pose, and share your perfect purple picture with everyone, and don’t forget to use the #PurpleThursday2026 hashtag to show your support even more!
Another great way to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month is by donating to your local victim service provider! Donations from our community help both AVRC, as well as the victims and survivors we serve, whether the donation is monetary or material goods. You can donate directly via AVRC’s PayPal, or bring a donation directly to our office at 415 Colorado Ave. in La Junta. Every donation makes a big difference in the lives of many individuals and families!
However you may choose to show it, whether during Domestic Violence Awareness Month or any time throughout the year, your support and solidarity for victims and survivors of domestic violence is invaluable!
